Photopass Magic Shots

Magic Shots at Disneyland and Disney World

Like many Capturing Magic team members, I love using PhotoPass and Memory Maker at Disney! Using PhotoPass and Memory Maker, you can also get Magic Shots, which are fun pictures where they digitally add in a character or Disney element.

Be sure to ask the PhotoPass photographer if they can do any magic shots. Depending on where they are in the park and their training, there are only certain magic shots they can do. But always ask, since they might not offer to take a magic shot picture otherwise! Also, most magic shots are only available during the day. I always love to get as many magic shots as possible. Here is a rundown of all the magic shots available in Disney World and Disneyland;

  • Awesome. So many more then I knew about. I’ll have to look for props with the photographers next time. THANKS

  • Steph

You’ve made me a believer in the Magic Shot! 🙂 😉

    • Heather

      Yay! 🙂

  • Heather

Just a note that some Photopass photographers now have large frames that you can hold in front of you. It’s not a magic shot, but it’s a cute pic! This started just after my trip, so I’ll have to wait until next time to get one. 🙂

  • Becky

Still kicking myself that I didn’t ask a Photopass Photog if they could do the Tinkerbell shot for my daughter. Next time!

  • Tarra

Wanted so bad to find a photopass photographer to do the Tinekrbell wings shot but we did get the Tinkerbell standing in our hands 🙂 My son also did the balloon shot which turned out adorable!

    Maybe next time!

    • Steph

I’m so glad you were able to get a few! Some of them can be very hard to find!!

  • Megan R

I love all of these and can’t wait to get there so I can try and get some of them! I would also love to know where you got the phillies Mickey and friends t shirt?

    • I got it at Citizens Bank Park several years ago. I have 4 Phils/Disney shirts 😉

  • Jackie

Our last trip my mission was to get as many magic shots as I could. We managed to get all the above except hook and the holiday ones. I did get stitch coming out of the box. We went during flower and garden so we also managed to get the butterflies.

  • Theresa Michalik

These are amazing, thank you so much for sharing. Cannot wait to go in November and hope to get many of these shots.

  • An Nguyen-Do

So when is the Magic added to the picture? We took a TON of magic shots last week and none of them are up yet…so we just look silly in the pictures!

We’re also missing some pictures in our photopass…does it take some time to get all the pictures added?

    • They should be added right away, but if they didn’t show up, you can just email them, call them, or click on the contact us link on their site (this is what I usually do.) Just tell them which pictures don’t have the magic shot in there, and they will add them. Same with missing pictures. I have at least one set of missing pictures every trip, but 99% of the time, if you contact them, they will be able to find the pictures and add them almost immediately.

  • Stacy

Any special shots for fall or Halloween? We will be there next week!

  • How do you find these photographers? Do you just ask them as you walk around the park? These are so cool. I wonder if I can sneak there today for the zero shot

    • Yes! Just ask any of the photopass photographers if they can do any magic shots. Sometimes they won’t be able to, but it never hurts to ask! Sometimes I’ve been lucky where a photographer will walk me all around an area of the park to get a bunch of different magic shots. 🙂

  • Ted

I found a photographer between Mexico and China at Epcot today – she offered me both the standard Tink in the hands and Stitch coming out of the ground. I asked her about the fairy wings for some of our group and she said no problem. I also asked her about the butterflies and she said she counld do it but didn’t know which way to pose the hands. I showed her your blog and she said it was better than the directions card they normally carry and so did butterflies for us. On the down side, she told me they retired the Soarin’ shot … hopefully she’s wrong.

    • Steph

That is so awesome to hear Ted!! Thanks for sharing!! I was in Epcot today too! 🙂

  • Gem

FANTASTIC! I will try and get as many of these as possible! Thanks for the list! 🙂

  • Mistie Clements

Was just there the week of Christmas and got many of these shots…..wanted to add I was told you can get Mushu from Mulan at the China pavilion in Epcot, but we went by two different times of day and found a photographer, even when Mulan was there, no magic photo.

  • Alyssa Drake

There’s a new Olaf one too! Friend of mine just got it within he last couple weeks

    • I found him this trip and just added it to the post! 🙂

  • Nicci P

Heather, OMG, I have to ask…. where did you get that awesome Phillies Disney shirt? It is just like my Tervis cups and I NEED it!!! 🙂 Thanks for all the info. I love these shots. I hadn’t seen many of them.

    • I got it at the ballpark several years ago. I have a few other Phils/Disney shirts that I got there 😉 This is the first year I didn’t see any Phils/Disney merchandise at the ballpark though. 🙁

      • Nicci P

Thanks. I’ll look next time I’m there. I haven’t been in a few years. So cute!!

  • Jeanne Bancroft

Man, I must have gone at a terrible time… After spending all that money on PhotoPass+ last year, I was only able to find ONE Photopass Photographer who was even willing to do a magic shot! Outside of Crystal Palace, in that little alcove, I got the Frog kiss magic shot. I don’t understand the “not trained to do it” part… like where you stand and look down at the pavement for Stitch to pop up, or holding out your hand to put a character in it… what’s to learn? You pose, they click, the magic is added later. I was really disappointed with PhotoPass+ overall last year. 5 photographers down the same street, and then not being able to find any others for hours… who needs to stop 5 times in 5 minutes? Unfriendly photographers, like we were interrupting their quiet time. Plus the quality of the pictures was terrible in most instances. Closed eyes, open mouths, looking away… and it’s not like it was busy. Most times we were the only ones waiting… when we could find them. 7 days, 120 pictures, MAYBE 10 good shots. Not a good value for me. 🙁 Anyway, great post, though!! Some of these are adorable, and I would have loved to have them!!

    • I’m so sorry you had that experience. 🙁 I have had more issues over the last 2 years with quality of Photopass pictures. Some are great, some are awful. One of the big things with PP was always getting great night shots, but I’ve had a lot of issues with that lately too. I’ve found photographers that clearly didn’t care to be there (guess those are the ones you found too), and others who were fantastic and went over and beyond what their job required. Every trip I debate if I want to get PP/memory maker because of the bad experiences, but I always end up getting it anyway. And I try to stop at as many PP photographers as possible, because the quality can be all over the place. To be fair, this trip I had a pretty good experience with PP, but I’ve had others where I have hardly any good pictures, and it’s frustrating.

I know with magic shots, they have to enter something into their keypad, so it could be they just didn’t know what to do. And sometimes you “luck” into being there when lots of new CMs were hired, so they are still learning. One time we found a PP learning the Vader magic shot about 2 weeks before Star Wars Weekend. I know you can get this with more than one person in the shot, but because she was in training, she just wouldn’t allow both of us in the picture.

      • Jeanne Bancroft

Thanks for explaining the magic shots process!! Now it makes a little more sense! Although I’m not glad to hear you’ve also had some of the same experiences I had, it’s good to know that it DOES happen, and it wasn’t just me!! 😉 Speaking of night shots… we had one taken our first night there outside the gates of the MK… HOLY MOLY…. 5 photos, and not ONE was usable!! One good thing that came out of it… one photographer who was using my camera around day 3, for some reason changed the setting on it (even though I know they are not supposed to!), and I ended up capturing all my photos in BOTH JPG & RAW, which worked out GREAT because now that I am using Lightroom, I can edit them much better! Now if they would only have shot in RAW on THEIR cameras, I could probably do something with a lot of bad pictures from PhotoPass… 😉

  • Gabrielle McCann

    Thanks for the updates!

  • Tara

Can you get these shots as a part of your Memory Maker package?

  • Jammie Jam

Simba is discontinued. I asked in May for him and they said. “NO.”

    • DailyDigiSteph

Yes, it is in the “discontinued” portion of the post.

  • Margo Mead

We had a photographer do the balloons shot in Epcot, but the rest of the picture became very dark for some reason.

    • Guest

      Here is the picture.

    • Guest

I am trying to attach the photo to this message.

      • DailyDigiSteph

Bad settings on the camera. They could have lightened it before adding the balloons. You could always call them.

  • Laura S

I have another little update on animated magic (at least for DHS): they aren’t doing Sulley any more; it’s Honey Lemon instead in the same spot by the fountain on Hollywood Boulevard. Bay max is in front of the big Studios Arch in front of Animation Courtyard. For Osborne Lights, there are actually two animated magic ones – Sven with Christmas Lights and Olaf (animation reused from Frozen Summer Fun). I did get the Prep and Landing one at the Christmas Party by the flagpole with the toy soldiers

    • DailyDigiSteph

That’s a whole lot of animation going on!!! THANKS for sharing!

    • Thanks so much Laura! I updated the post to reflect these changes. 🙂

    • Laura S

I may have posted too soon this morning – just had a park day to collect magic shots and ended up with a few more. At Animal Kingdom on the backside of the tree, now they have an animated with the Frozen trolls (looks a lot like the Aurasma animation if anyone saw that over the summer). I also had a mistletoe non-animated one done there – not sure if it’s location restricted or not. I also went to Epcot and can confirm the Norway one is Sven (gonna have to email about that one). Also the one at the front of Spaceship earth is no longer animated Mike, but Olaf ; he’s the same as the one on the backside of the ball that the Disney Parks blog mentions. I have a feeling they’re going to be adding a lot more and changing the existing ones up a lot more frequently in the next few months. (And sidenote about your comment about not being able to see the animated shots in a viewing station in a park – you can’t view the mp4 files, but you see the still JPEG version.)

      • Joseph Cartwright

No Mike No Sulley and just Frozen Frozen Frozen everywhere 🙁
Wont be long before all the magic shots will be frozen related

  • Jen Little

I have been hearing people saying that their photos are really bad quality from photo pass photographers. They posted a few and look like they have not gone through any processing and the setting are pretty bad. They are so dark! Do you know if photos go through, or are supposed to go through, a touch up before they get posted to your account? They are wondering what to do. Thanks!

    • DailyDigiSteph

I’ve never heard of anyone have ALL of their PhotoPass photos be dark or bad quality. Maybe one or two, when settings are wrong. My understanding is that they do go through an editing process. I always recommend calling PhotoPass to see if there is anything they can do. Their number is at the top of this page.

      • Jen Little

Thanks Steph. I did encourage them to contact PhotoPass. There were several people that have been there the last week and about half of their photos are dark. Many, they said, were blurry. And they have encountered photographers who don’t really want to take pictures. :/ Many commented that it wasn’t worth the cost. It was kind of disappointing, but others talked about the 100’s of photos they got because they stopped every time they saw a photographer. Anyway, I am hoping for a better experience.

I just returned for Disney World. When we ere at Hollywood Studios we were offered a Magic Shot at the fountain near Hollywood and vine. The photographer wouldn’t tell us what it was and said it was unique to that place unfortunately the shot didn’t work. From the way the photo was taken it appears something would pop up out of the fountain. Have you heard of this one? I’m really curious what it should have been.
    Thank You

    • Have you contacted photopass to have the magic shot added to the picture? I’ve noticed that I have to do this more often lately. There are now 2 magic shots by the fountain that I think you mean, a Minnie and a Mickey sitting next to you. I was able to get the Minnie one.

Thanks so much for this post!! We are just coming off our Disney high from our last visit and my daughter said one of her favorite things we did during this trip was capture all the magic shots that we learned about here! Of all the disney world shots you have listed, I think we got all (non-seasonal) except Jiminey, the snow flakes and 2 of the 3 stitch shots (the only photographer that had heard of the other 2 said they were only available around Christmas, not sure if that’s true though.) We also found one I didn’t see on your page in animal kingdom with the Lion King trio but it won’t let me post the picture!

  • Colleen Cushman

    • Aww, I’m so happy to hear how much your daughter enjoyed this!! We must have been there around the same time since I got back about 2 weeks ago! I’m working on updating the post with new shots, pics & things I learned from this trip. 🙂 Yep, the Lion King magic shot is very new! I also got it and was very excited. 😀 The snowflakes are now discontinued. The stitch shots are still available, I got the ground & ice cream one this trip, and I believe the box is still available as long as the photographer has the prop.

  • Karen

Great! I didn’t know they did that :O The photographers never offered me this, but when I was checking my pictures I found one of Sven photobooombing our family pic. It was really funny, because I didn’t know they did that.

    • Isn’t it fun when you find a surprise! 🙂

  • M L Eason

Heading to WDW in 2 weeks, hoping to score some of the newer ones like Baymax and animated Tinkerbell. We were there last November as the animated oned just came out, and got Mike, Sven and Sully.

  • M L Eason

I’d be happy to share the ones you don’t have – if I knew how.

  • Do you have to know which shots to ask for or can you walk up and just ask for a Magic Shot and let them do their “magic”?

  • Clare

I had a different Pascal shot last summer at WDW. I got this in two spots, here and on the way in to Haunted Mansion. Not sure if it is still available. It’s my favourite, as I love Pascal!

    • That’s awesome! I’ve heard rumors about him appearing at Magic Kingdom but hadn’t seen it before now!

  • Eileen

When a Photopass Photographer takes a Magic shot and you don’t have Memorymaker can you still get it?

    • Yes, as with any Photopass picture, you can purchase individual pictures from the Photopass/Memory Maker site

  • ltp

Thanks so much for this list, it was really helpful! At WDW: There is a new (?) animated Magic Shot with Joy and Sadness from Inside Out. We had it taken past the fountain at EPCOT with Spaceship Earth in the background. Also Snowflakes and Wings which i think you have listed as No Longer Available are still available as of April 2016.
